My Story

Three years in.
One shot at the floor.

I am a senior at George Washington High School in Charleston, West Virginia. I have spent two seasons in the marching band color guard and one season in winter guard, learning flag, rifle and sabre on a gym floor in a state where competitive guard is a small, tight community.

In September I auditioned for Onyx and earned a contract with their Independent Open ensemble, a competitive winter guard that performs on the national WGI circuit and finishes its season at World Championships in Dayton. For a senior from Charleston, that is a real step up.

Onyx rehearses in Dayton, Ohio. I live 194 miles away. Making this contract real means driving that round trip almost every weekend from September through April: thirty trips, 12,140 miles, and twenty‑six nights in a hotel.

The tuition is $1,850. The road is the rest.

Every dollar goes to my season. Nothing else.

It isn't the tuition. It's the drive.

Onyx rehearses in Dayton, Ohio. I live in Charleston, West Virginia. That is 194 miles each way, and the season calendar asks me to make that round trip thirty times between September and World Championships in April.

Tuition for the whole season is $1,850. Getting me to the rehearsals I have already been contracted for costs $12,734.
